Does media kill sports or makes it more popular?

Throughout the centuries, sport was one of the most popular activities in the world. The interest in sports is increasing enormously on annual basis. People are attending training for different purposes: stay healthy, stay fit, achieve targets, or simply fill their spare time in a wholesome way. Moreover, people enjoy observing sports and supporting their favorite team on all competitions. Many years ago people were ought to go on stadiums and feel the atmosphere of the competition. Nevertheless, currently people prefer spending this time at their houses and watching competitions or others of that ilk trough TV or internet. Does media give a chance to people to watch competitions if they are not able to do it, or it makes people more idle? Media has an enormous influence on sports nowadays; however, it affects differently on people.

On the one hand, there are young athletes that might go on competition overseas, and their parents are looking forward seeing them performing and competing, but they are not able to go with them. Here media makes its own work. They can still be informed through any mean of media. Depending on competition there are streams happening on TV or internet. Moreover, disabled and underprivileged people also want to support their favorite teams. Media saves the day once again.

Nevertheless, in order to watch a football game, which takes place in the same city in which one does live, he prefers to watch it at home, lying on a couch, with beer. A few people say that they are scared to face with the congestion of the near-by traffic of the stadiums, since, a large number of other people also want to go to see the match on time; you have to park your car, which is probably not near to the stadium. Hence, you have to walk a quite long distance and be in the crowd of elbowing people. In my opinion, government has to consider this situation and make it more convenient to people go to the match. In that way we will probably be less idle and more mobile.

In addition, mass media creates sport stars in the world. Do you know who was the best football player 100 years ago and how did he look like? Probably not. Media emphasized Beckham, Messi, Ronaldo and others. These people can be seen in various ads, films, music videos. On my own experience, I know a few athletes only by means of media. Furthermore, media uses the strongest football players in order to promote a particular product or film.

How do social networks promote sports? Jenifer Beese (2012) says that “according to recent data, more than 80 percent of sports fans interact with social media sites while watching games on TV, and more than 60 percent do so while watching live events”. She also highlights that after a particular circumstances, athletes start gaining followers on Twitter with incredible speed (Beese, 2012).

In conclusion, media nowadays influence on everything in the world. By affecting on sports, it affects us. Nonetheless, we cannot make any decision or find solutions from escaping this it, even though it has a negative effect on us. However, we can attempt to be less influenced by supporting our teams on the stadiums and going in for sports by ourselves.

In this video Erik Michielsen talks about media impact on sports:

Hockey only for high-income families

Parents are taking their children to sports in order to see them developing in physical way as well.  But what happens when it turns out that parents have to sacrifice big money for that? It discourages a big number of families. In Canada hockey is popular sport, but very expensive meanwhile.  Kristina Rutherford in her article from CBC is attempting to find out how to prevent collapse of hockey in Canada.

Rutherford (2009) found Gibblett family where all three brothers: Dyllon, Ryley, Joshua are going on hockey, because their father is working very hard on it. Bu what about others? What about families, which sons are striving to be in a hockey team and their parents are not capable of paying for them?

Registration fee is 2,000$, equipment 1,000$, and particular sum of money for travel, where rooms and meals are also included. This is the reason why soccer in Canada starts surpassing hockey.  Gardner and Casey are suppose that increasing ice time fees are guilty for significantly rising registration prices (Rutherford, 2009).

Athletics for Kids and West Van Minor suggests a help to families to get their children into sports, by financing registration for children before eight and accepting payments trough credit card. That is how Gibblett’s children are able to attend hockey trainings and helps them follow their dream. He said "I don't know how, but you just make it work. I don't think about it, I just do it. I know hockey's costly, but it's worth it. The boys love it” (Rutherford, 2009).
